Challenge: Abandon Buildings III (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D7000
Lens: Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon
Location: Warrington UK
Date: Aug 7, 2011
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 1600

Date Uploaded: Aug 7, 2011

This is handheld at 1/4 second and ISO 1600. I took my tripod with me but it was't tall enough to get the angle I wanted.
The place is known as RAF Croft. The history is interesting with a very strong USA/UK connection. Read more here

Thanks for all the comments and votes. Really pleased to get a ribbon with this.
After ten votes it was sitting at 5.18 and I was feeling a bit sick. However, a look at the scores thread showed me that others were having a similar experience and things soon started to improve.
It was quite an adventure visiting this place (but if anybody asks... I was never there!)
BTY the car in the image is a Rover P5. These cars were built between 1958 and 1973 and were known affectionately as 'the poor man's Rolls Royce'
Thanks again
David

post processing:
In response to a couple of requests I'm showing the original unedited picture and a colour version of the challenge entry.
First step was to produce a fairly mildly tone-mapped version using Photomatix and then open in PS.
Next a slight crop from top and bottom of image.
Then a little Topaz Denoise.
Next a black & white adjustment layer.
Then select the central area visible through the doorway. Sharpen this area and apply a curves adjustment layer to increase contrast.
Some general dodging and burning before adding a vignette and a border.

Here's the colour version:

And the original:

This is a gorgeous image. One of my favourite of the challenge.
I was wondering if you could give a very quick summary of the process used to process the shot. The feel you got is wonderful!

Congrats on the ribbon, and for getting in and out of the place without getting busted. This is most likely the first ever photo shot at 1600 iso, and hand held at 1/4 sec to ribbon at DPC. It's exactly right for the challenge theme. Well done.

Amazing photo! Love the graffiti - very apt!! I can only dream of taking photos like this. Out of interest, does it require much post editing to create a photo like this or is this straight from the camera with no post editing?

I really like the hint of light coming from the top center. That somehow helps to bring things together.

This has the strong feel of a NikonJeb shot. I see some subtle but visible tonemapping, not too far off from my own usage of it.

Don't you just adore walking in on things like this, close your eyes and step back in time to see the owners of this car walking around it? I think it's a plus you've finished it in B&W ,although the color version must be great as well.
