Wow...thrilled with the top 10 finish! Thanks to all for the votes and comments. Ahh...the plant....either love it or hate it variable :) I went through several attempts of the shot initially without the plant (which left too much void on the frame and the window. I needed to fill the negative space and the planted Palm Tree really spoke to me as something which would clearly be present in an L.A. Private Eye office. Initially I used the plant as a GoBo and fired a flash through it to get just the shadow. However the shadow and the mysterious light source did not really work with the composition so decided to leave it in the frame but out of focus. The plant was actually fairly close to me and this was shot with a 50mm prime so rather narrow DoF. To get the reflection from the blinds had a snooted SB-900 flash on a boom out of the window of an adjacent room (this was shot on 11th floor) triggered wirelessly. Had to pre-focus, then use the 10sec self timer to position my "burly" body which does much better on the other side of the lens....and light up a cig :) Thanks again folks!

Great model, his facial expression and burly body really make this shot - like the plant placement as well .. the suspenders are a very nice touch. 8

Man that looks like a reefer! The plant is a bit too big and disrtracts but nice shot.

Yes, the plant! A perfect touch that completes the scene.

Great setup. Wish the light stripes on his face were as good as the ones across his tie.

Excellent! Very nice lighting work. It definitely has a film noir feel.

I love the lighting and shadows but that plant on the left is too overpowering and distracting.

This is definitely noir-ish. It's dark and feels well done. Somehow the huge plant adds a lot to the photo for me. Like the "director" of your movie said "I don't care, we've got a story to tell!" I don't think I'm explaining that well, but I'm bumping this to an 8.

Kudos for letting the gumshoe smoke. An unlit cig just wasn't part of the scene then. Love the blinds and the potted plant to set the scene..

Great, classic image. My only advice is perhaps to cut a bit of the plant out of the shot - not all of it - just the long strip that is pure black.
