[Aug. 18th, 2011 10:54:05 PM]

My family and I went on an 8 day trip up the east coast. I didn't think I'd be able to enter any challenges. However, when this challenge first came out, I knew I wanted to do a great blue heron. They're so tall and interesting looking. Either have them standing in a landscape shot, or flying in a vertical shot.

But we had to leave on vacation before I could go search for a gbh.

We stopped at a wildlife refuge outside of Atlantic City, and that's where I got this shot.

Here's another shot from the refuge:

[Aug. 18th, 2011 10:55:27 PM]

I'm so incredibly excited that this held a 7! It almost lost it 48 hours ago, and has climbed incredibly on the last two days.

Thanks, everyone for such kind votes and wonderful comments! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I thought the bodiless reflection was so cool. :)

In regards to the question regarding how I got the effect:

As far as the look goes, it's completely natural. The shot was taken at sunset, and the lighting, reflections, everything is almost straight out of the camera. I did a little bit of curves on it, but that's about it. I was just incredibly lucky on the shot. It was nature, not me. :)

regarding the relevance to the challenge question. I had originally thought of doing a vertical shorebird in a horizontal crop -- like this shot:

But I liked the flying shot better. I figured if standing was vertical, then since he's rotated 90 degrees flying, he was horizontal. :)

Heh! Love reading the comments. It really is perfect in this orientation. Would have been fine in horizontal, too. So doesn't matter whether it met the challenge or not - it is simply a fine photograph!

This is beautiful. Perhaps I'm thinking too much here...so the..legs are horizontal? It's a vertical shot of horizontal legs? I'm really not trying to be a "DMNC nazi," I'm just trying to pick out the part that fits. Is it the reflection? Vertical reflection? Again, beautiful shot.

ETA: Vertical crop of horizontal flight? Hence the title?

Nice, but man do I ever wish the bird were flying the other way (plus if it weren't for the challenge, that it would be landscape with space to fly into).
