[Oct. 16th, 2011 04:45:15 AM]

As a boy goes through his youth he often feels alone, as if he is the only one on the planet. It is almost as if he is outside his body looking in....wishing himself to grow to adult...trying to hurry up the years. Too outsiders he often appears aloof.

I first saw a drawing similiar to this on a paperback novel when I was a child. It was of a boy with a topiary tree on a planet with the bright blue sky behind him. I have not been able to find this image since. When I googled the book I could only find a new cover showing only a portion of the image but in a much more sketch like fashion, nothing like I remember it to be. The cover I remember didn't have the day/night, nor did it have the sleeping boy. So this became an image I had wanted to do for some time. I knew it would have to be in Expert Editing, so when this challenge came along I knew straight away what I had to do. It took some time to find the right location. I think this is the only hill with lawn on it within 300kms.

I wanted to portray the boy during the day and the night to emphasise the drawn out time that boys often feel and the topiary tree is a portrayal of themselves. Watering it and hoping it to grow into maturity.

This web-size version doesn't show the stars in the sky, whereas the large version does. I hope this image comes across to the viewers how I imagined it.

If anybody is able to find the original cover that I remember please let me know...I would be so grateful. I loved that cover...I can't recall if I read the book though. My first stepmother owned the book so I have no chance of trying that avenue. I can't even find it on the internet.

Le Petit Prince

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

A chief is a man who assumes responsibility. He says "I was beaten," he does not say "My men were beaten".
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

A civilization is a heritage of beliefs, customs, and knowledge slowly accumulated in the course of centuries, elements difficult at times to justify by logic, but justifying themselves as paths when they lead somewhere, since they open up for man his inner distance.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

A civilization is built on what is required of men, not on that which is provided for them.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

A rock pile ceases to be a rock pile the moment a single man contemplates it, bearing within him the image of a cathedral.
Antoine de Saint-Exupery

A single event can awaken within us a stranger totally unknown to us. To live is to be slowly born.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

And now here is my secret, a very simple secret; it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

and so on...

I think your link was wrong...it contained wolf images. The image I remember was like my image but the boy was standing on top of the globe with a watering can and a topiary and in full daylight. It wasn't in sketch form but a very detailed almost photo like image.

What a fantastic concept! I love it, makes me think about "Le Petit Prince" from St Exupery.
That said, it's now becoming a bad habit from you to beat me from one place, that must change! ;) Congratulations Judi!

ETA: Ah, just read other comments, I see I'm not the only one seeing that reference!

My pick for the blue. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!!!!! A bit of noise and banding in the day sky but wow. Love the flares off the moon, and the lighting on the boy on the night side is splendid, of not quite moonlike. But the clarity, sharpness, concept, details... you ROCK!
