The enigmatic Altocumulus Lenticularis. A monstrous mountain wave cloud tonight. 01/05/2012 at 5:02 PM. As seen from the pullout on Trail Ridge Road, near Deer Ridge, on the south side of Deer Mountain, RMNP, Estes Park, CO.

Bigger version here.

Well, that is a lot of publication of an image of mine which has not yet been in the DPChallenge competition.

Below is my answer to an inquiry from MSNBC.com:
Canon 5D, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L, f/11, ISO 100, three bracketed images (0.5s, 0.2s, 0.3s). Tripod mount. The three images were blended in NikSoftware's HDR Efex Pro. The goal/objective of my photography was to produce an image that closely matched what I saw with my eyes.

The three bracketed images were captured "straight through the lens". No one image retained all the detail in the shadows AND the highlights. But, the blended HDR image generated a satisfactory histogram. My estimate is the dynamic range of the scene between blackest shadows and brightest highlights was about 8 stops of light, hence the need for the HDR process. I did have soft grad ND filters with me, but did not have time (or rather, I didn't risk the extra time) to use the ND filters. Mostly, I exposed for the highlights and prayed for the shadows.

Hey, it didn't even do too badly on DPC. Every now and then the voters appreciate something as much as the rest of the world. Or almost as much, anyway.

The title seems so appropriate for a challenge in December. Let's hope you are not a good prognosticator :) I know you went through a lot this year so I hope that 2012 ends on a positive note for you and your family.

Beautiful scene - that cloud is so fascinating. I've never seen anything like it.
