items were placed on a sheet of glass, with a blue cloth shower curtain underneath. illumination was from below and from behind. a circular polarizer was used to minimize the reflection, which resulted in the "floating, 3-D" look.

honestly, it wasn't planned, it just came out that way.

You did a good job making this look like a green screen or something. I'm guessing you used a very small aperture to have relatively no depth of field. I think that's the thing this might be missing... depth of field? It has a strange 3D look that tricks the eye. Looks like the island is floating more than sitting on the table.
