Challenge: Best of 2011 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D300s
Date: Aug 3, 2011
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/3 sec
Date Uploaded: Jan 22, 2012

Shot on a 42-ft trawler doing about 6 knots on a ride from a marina in Portsmouth to Newport, RI. I was lucky enough to have a storm quickly move in right around sunset as we approached Newport harbor. This is definitely not "out of the camera", although I think it looks a lot closer to how I saw the sky.

Tone mapped in Photomatix Pro, used Topaz adjust to add some color/texture to the sky and the wood on the deck, lens correction filter to add a little vignette, levels adjustment to brighten the foreground, some dodge/burn in various places, hue/saturation adjustment to tone down the yellows in the foreground.

As a semi-noob to DPC, this is my first "best of" challenge, and since I picked my shot in the first day or two of the challenge announcement, I drove myself nuts tweaking this picture over the next 3 weeks. I have 14 versions of this photo in a folder, and after looking at them consecutively, I can barely remember why I liked or disliked any of them. Oh well, I had a blast taking this shot, and I'm glad I get to enter it so many months later.

Beautiful sky framed with a lovely set of curves. Fantastic and way underrated image, in my opinion. Great job.

Very cool clouds and details. I'm just not a real big fan of the curved/fisheye style.

Unique POV and nice textured painted sky. Good exp. That UWA distortion is difficult to control.

Sometimes fish eye lenses work, sometimes they don't .. in this case it worked - nicely done -

Gorgeous sky. I find the larger parts of the frame with the boat really distract from what I want to see more of.

Love the fisheye here. The bridge adds a nice element too.

Dramatic light! Wonder if that's the Newport bridge in the distance...

LOVE the use of the wide angle - very fun feel to this, and a great sky to go with it!
