Challenge: Free Study 2012-01 (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: 2012
Camera: Nikon D60
Lens: Promaster 11-18mm F/4.5-5.6 XR EDO AF for Nikon

Date Uploaded: Jan 26, 2012

I think I have recently been of the thought that I should only ever do portraiture work with my 50mm lens, it being an ultra sharp beauty. But I was sitting in my kitchen with my buddy, featured here, and I had my camera to hand, the ultra wide angle on but other lenses in the next room so I could only use that one.
So this here is a portrait at full crop (well, full with my cropped sensor) taken at a focal length of 11.

It's nice to be reminded now and then that I definitely don't know anything about photography!

This came out really well given the wide angle and potential for distortion. I enjoy the offset placement of Mark in the frame; creates a nice dynamic feel to this.

Beat me by a mile, neighbor ... faves and comments and deservedly so. The edginess of this transforms just another portrait into a work of art.

What's up with the composition? Were you drunk? I can't even see his left ear.

An exceptionally good use of this lens. Keep doing stuff like this - it is very good!

Your eye is very good, the feeling is there, the tones are subtle and the focus is perfect. The crop brings it to a level above mere classic portraiture, and that creative thinking, is to be commended.

Sadly, I did not get through all of the free study entries this month, and I missed this stunning shot. There may e a couple of gaps in your technical knowledge of photography, but your eye definitely knows photography. Superb portrait.

Love offset portraits. I know some will criticize you for it but I think it draws attention to the subject. Great light also.

Love the marginal framing. Good job with the glasses.

I'm not keen on the crop personally but the crisp focus is great. He has an interesting face. I feel with the negative space to his right, there was no need to crop off the side of his glasses or the bottom of his beard; I think this would have benefitted from his eyes looking off into that space. Still a very good shot overall though.

very nice, love the textures of the face. I only wish it hadn't been cropped so tightly on the right.
