Challenge: Best of 2011 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D700
Lens: Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II
Location: Lhasa-Tibet
Date: Aug 29, 2011
Aperture: 7.1
ISO: 800
Shutter: 1/640
Date Uploaded: Feb 1, 2012

This was a snapshot of the Tibetans during their Shotun Festival and I believe one picture can replace many words so do the eyes of these old and young women tell us many things in silence. A lot of things may they want to share to others but can’t be spoken out because of the language problem, bashfulness, anxiety or any depressing conditions, who knows...

I'm torn as to whether this is a sad or a heartwarming picture. It's certainly emotive, though it's hard to know in what sense. Nice work.

beautiful candid and the colors and light are perfect. unfortunately I'm seeing many candids where the processing detracts from the photo. Not this one!

So much character in the old womans face, and so much innocence in the childs. Such a contrast.

What a great capture. The contrast of the aged face and the young face, the lines of worry and care and the innocence of youth. Great detail, and colors.

I really like this, but I keep wondering if it would have more impact with a tighter crop (showing less of the upper left)

Truly outstanding. I can't help seeing a huge potential for B&W and I would like slightly more fill on her wonderful expression, but it might well be my monitor playing tricks on me.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: Oh my word, the light! What an amazing collaboration of light and shade and colour and haze and sharpness and people and story. It feels sad, I wonder if it is? The mind conjures the dark background haze to acrid smoke and our Western, Hollywood-induced indoctrination turns this into a war zone. I can't see how it could be - perhaps a natural disaster? I almost feel guilty for overlaying a back-story - I'll refer you back to the strong narrative you've created with this image.

Critical stuff: I wonder about the left side of the image - do we need it? It doesn't really matter...

Overall: Amazing, powerful image.

White hat on the left is kind of distracting, maybe better a square format IMO.

P.S. Title seems inconsonant, like hanging fluffy dice in an Aston Martin.

She looked back over her shoulder at the ruins they were leaving. The sadness was heavy. The past lay behind them, but she carried her family's future.
Bearing her granddaughter on the foundation of her back, she turned to the road and a new home.

That is the story I feel when I look upon this shot. A great shot - something I would expect to see in a story in National Geographic.
