A study in black & white. A wary coyote in Moraine Park in Rocky Mountain National Park. 02/13/12. Note the eyes and ears checking three different directions. We have very robust coyotes because there are no wolves. (yet)

Oh, and I should have mentioned the fur standing up on the back of the neck. There was no wind. He was showing anger/fear/alarm.

Photographer's notes: Canon 5D, Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/8000s, ISO 400. Ironically, because I had the ISO set to 400, the shutter speed hit the camera's limit. The camera's sensor would normally attempt to make that snow 12% gray.... which would underexpose the bright, white snow and cause some details on the shady side of the coyote to be blocked up shadows. Just lucky that the camera hit that 1/8000s constraint.... allowing detail in the shadows and the snow looks naturally white to me. The ISO 400 was a mistake (I had been shooting in the shade just a minute before). It was a fortuitous mistake.

I also agree that this should have scored higher. All I had to do was wait for the silly bear at the zoo to make a cute pose. You had to catch a wild animal in it's own environment, which by the way, you are the master of on this site.

The passing glance is awesome. Just ran into one today, about this close from me, during a hike around the park. Gave me the very same look :-)

A disappointing result. Deserved better than this. A fine nature study. Nothing artificial or forced about it, much to be absorbed through closer examination.

Very disdainful look on his face. I don't think coyotes are very impressed by us :-). Like the detail on the beastie.

What is it about all of the titles being the filename in this challenge?

Are you all revolting against titles? (I hope so... it's a photography contest, not a writing contest. But, I digress... )

I love the white background with the subject being dark. Well done.

I like your shot, but wonder if you might've been able to clone out the grey smudges top left and right above the ear? Also, several of the stalks seem much much sharper than others near them that seem as though they should be equally sharp.
