Fill flash will help in these situations (if you had it on, you should have been just a bit closer I think), and perhaps a slightly lower angle.

So, other than that, this is a fun image, I like the overall feel, and think you'll love that new 50D..

BTW, I just got into polarizing filtration, I think that could have worked nicely on the water in this shot too, they're not too expensive, I would suggest grabbing one.
