Great Egret Beak'on of Colorby
progersctComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
My first impressions of your picture are twofold - first of all it's very small and secondly your framing is excellent. The framing I like especially because it adds impact to the shot and helps guide the viewers eye. I find my eye kinda starts at the egret's eye, moves along the beak, back to the eye and then anti-clockwise around the white feathers - pretty good. The framing also gives the feeling of being close to the bird and that comes across strongly in the comments you've received. You've arranged the shot nicely along the lines of the rule of thirds and this picture really suits that very well. I think the only improvement I could suggest would be to just bring the tip of the beak back into the picture if you can.
Now on to the size - I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that this was necessary for some reason. Perhaps this is a small crop of a larger picture or perhaps you used a long lens and to make it larger would show up some camera shake. But like it or not the size has negatively affected your score - again this is pretty clear from your comments.
Technically your shot is pretty good. At this size the focus looks OK but there's not much detail. The exposure is good - I'd have liked stronger daylight to really make the colour of that beak pop off the screen but that might have led to overexposure on the white feathers. All in all I think you did great with the exposure.
I'm not a big fan of punning or contrived titles but I would never let the title affect my score.
Suitability for the challenge seems OK to me. I like the contrast of the yellow and the white, the colour and the lack of colour. I think that's a nice interpretation of the challenge.
Overall this is a good challenge submission with excellent impact and interest. Well done.
