very nicely done - if anything the lighting it a bit too harsh, i know it is basic (and this could be done with selective editing easier than changing the light setup) but i think it would look great if the eye area stayed as it was and the highlighted area be a bit more saturated/darker. Even so one of the better shots i have seen so far.

"This photo has been validated." - i get why they might have requested this as it looks like something painted in photoshop ;) I think the white space at the top conflicts with the bit at the bottom left and a crop from the top would benefit it. But that is looking at it from a peice of art rather than a photograph, and in this instance i am voting on a photograph and it is just a bit too much out of the comfort zone of leniancy in voting, but still it has it's merits. As for what it is... white peices of paper curled up and put on something black, inverted and contrasted to death? ;)

i think it is an abstract photo... what yo you think? Might be a puzzle for some but i'm about 95% sure this is the skin of a melon, furthermore it isnt very appealing compositionally, a slighter angle and increased dof might have made for a more interesting take on the subject, and maybe even harsh sidelighting to pick off the texture.
