thanks so much for all the info ..
very interesting ..

btw .. you need a sherpa for all your gear ..!!..
hoping that's not politically incorrect to say .. you never know these days ..

three minutes and 15 seconds later ..
I just googled sherpa as I was unsure if they actually carried the gear ..

"In some of the toughest terrain in the world at the highest altitudes, they routinely carry more than their body weight in gear, food, and equipment for tourists. It's not unusual for their loads to be upward of 150 lbs."

i reckon puffins are up there as the most interesting and photogenic birds .. and i'm not detracting from your photographic skills btw ..
and that monster of a lens .. interested in your shutter speed .. and wondering how much you were zoomed in .. and if you were using a tripod .. if i shot at that speed at 400mm those birds would have been blurry for sure . . but you are the most wonderful wildlife photographer .. you make it seem easy .. :)

Thank you Roz for the very kind comments. The photo was taken on Skomer Island in the UK back in 2019. I took the 70-200 and the 100-400 lens with me but pretty much used the 100-400 lens the whole time. I had taken a tripod with me but the birds move so fast and it was awkward setting up a tripod on the narrow paths so I ended up taking all my photos hand held.

This particular photo was taken with a focal length of 241mm so I was lucky to get away with this at that shutter speed. It is an incredible lens though which I am getting more fonder of over time. It works really well with the Canon R6.

Fingers crossed I will get to return to Skomer island this year.

Here is an uncropped version of the photo:

Edited to add the following:

I have been having pretty good results lately using the 100-400ii lens with a Canon Extender EF 2x III on the Canon R6. Which basically gives you 800mm at F11.

I also had a free loan of the Canon 800mm F11 recently and it delivers very similar results but much lighter to hold though clearly not as flexible. I am still tempted to pick one of these 800mm lenses up as they are relatively cheap and would definitely prove useful in certain circumstances.

Color hands down for me in this one. Would be without the processing on the bw (esp grain in background) but that cinches it. Still my top - or one of my top picks in what turned out to be a very cool challenge.
