2017_Mamoth Lakes Minaret Vistaby rgrenaderphotoComment by Zoomdak: Odd underscore in the title but wonderful mount vista. I think more of the bottom could have been cropped off to bring more impact of the mountains. Weird kinda purple haze in the middle. 7 here. |

Sunset Wednesday Los Angelesby rgrenaderphotoComment by MarioPierre: I definitely love that the focus in on this beautiful sky. The only part I'm not crazy about are the elements at the bottom of the frame, perhaps arranged in a different way it could have been interesting, but this way, those things just feel like distractions. Still lovely! |

Milky Way over Grand Canyonby rgrenaderphotoComment by rgrenaderphoto: Originally posted by kasaba: Stunning - I am going on a photo trip next week and one of the "lessons" will be astrophotography - can't wait to learn this. |
I used a Sigma 20 mm f/1.4 on a D850, which is a Hoover for light.
Depending on your camera/lens, start with the lens wide open, ISO 1600 to 3200. Shutter speed, use the 500 "rule." Divide 500 by your focal length to get the longest shutter speed possible without stars being streaks, not distinct dots. Which I did not follow. Take lots of shots, zoom in with live view to see stars in your exposure, and just fiddle around.
Good Luck! DM when you get back if you'd like.
