Okay. This image has only one minor drawback. It has too much movement to achieve, what I think, is the effect you were after. You want movement, you want some texture and most important you want a pleasing design. First, I give you credit for pursuing this concept. And you came very close.

The first we do is add a little more light. These things are fun to light because you can throw light coming from the side and another coming from the back. Also top and bottom. Next, we want at least an f8 aperture. Higher if light allows and a shutter speed of 1/15. This may even be increased if you are using a fan to drive the ribboms. So you take a series of shots starting with 1/30, 1/15 etc.

The above will give you a choice of color, movement and texture.

If you have no access to all of these controls try an aperture priority or shitter priority. The main thing is get enough light and do not hesitate to bring lamps in from the other room.

Greetings from the Critique Club...

Definately fits the challenge, so that's good heh. Seems the lighting is a bit harsh on the lower part of the photo and almost in need of some more in the upper part.

The focus seems a bit soft throughout, but it's not that bad. As far as composition goes, it's obviously well thought-out, but as far as for viewing, my eyes seem to jump around quite a bit never really coming to rest on a main subject of interest.

I, too, ask myself why the flies? I don't really feel they add anything extra to the image, just seem to busy it up some. I've noticed that when shooting close up shots like this, the image will come out a lot 'cleaner' if you use a paper that is more shiny than coarse. The shadows will fall smoother and there will be soft reflections whereas in this shot, everything seems a bit coarse.

-- Fix the lighting, and use a 'smoother' paper, and I bet your score would increase quite a bit. Overall, it's a good idea, keep shooting!

interesting interpretation, but not sure what relevance the flys serve. if you could somehow have managed to get only the R in focus (and eliminated the flys and gradient to brown from top to bottom), this could be great!

Did you think of the way buddhists pray when you took this picture? They write prayers on peaces of fabric. Each time the ribbon flaps, a prayer is sent to buddha.
