Mystifyby nlghttrainComment by ltlmschrisss: In my opinion this photo dnmc because the light appears to be stationary to me. I think that if you had the glasses centered more and wrapped the light around them in some way it might have been a little better for me. Good abstract though. It did take me a bit to figure out what the glasses where the shapes created here are pretty neet. For the challenge I am giving a 3 for my opinion of dnmc. Outside of challenge I would give it a 6. Good luck! |

Mystifyby nlghttrainComment by bassbone: very cool colors and shapes but the image really doesn't seem sharp enough to pull off this type of macro |

Tenticleby nlghttrainComment by bassbone: the details and colors are very good but the lighting in the lower right is a distraction - I wonder whether a crop only on the upper right section would come off better |

Marine Biology - So much we dont knowby nlghttrainComment by zardoz: Re: Your thread.
As a documentary style shot your image is extremely good. It shows the creature with excelent clarity and detail. The composition does not waste any space. However DPC voters are also/exclusively going to be looking at the image as a piece of art. From an artistic point of view the lighting is rather harsh and the composition rather predictable. The image you are comparing to uses some "negative space" as an artistic, compositional element and also has the advantage of a rather pleasantly coloured background.
In short , your image is a fine peace of documentary but lacks the artistic element that voters look for.
All IMHO, regards, Mike Message edited by author 2007-06-07 00:34:51. |

Marine Biology - So much we dont knowby nlghttrainComment by pidge: In regards to your thread - the first thing that comes to mind is the composition. The rule of thirds exists for a reason - it helps make a documentary type shot interesting. You're shot is perfectly centred, and closely cropped at the edges. Putting a bit of empty space on the right, in the direction its eyes are looking, may convey a bit more interest to the casual observer.
Also, what other said about slightly harsh lighting on the subject. You used a relatively slow shutter speed, so I imagine this was the best of several shots, but with a bit of curves or levels in photoshop, you could take a bit of the harsh light off the cuttlefish.
Hope this helps. PM if you have any questions
cheers

Marine Biology - So much we dont knowby nlghttrainComment by Blue Moon: i <3 cuttlefish
I was snorkling in bermuda and suddenly notice something a few inches from my goggles, so I backed up and there was a whole line of baby cuttlefish about 3 inches long. I looked around and soon saw the mom, I tried to get closer, but they swim faster than you would think! great shot! |
