My 1st moon shotby

For a first shot this is an excellent attempt at capturing a very difficult image. The problem with the moon is the fact that it remains quite bright and digital camera can barely cope with dark surroundings and a sudden light source (I am aware that the moon reflects sunlight and does not emit it, but for argument̢۪s sake, I'll call it a light source). So all in all, this shot works very effectively. Your 1/250 shutter speed was definitely a good call.
There isn't a lot that could be improved in this image. I think that, as someone else noted earlier, possibly converting to black and white would have been good as it would have taken away some of that unavoidable colour noise around the edges. In terms of focus there isn't much that one can do without a huge telephoto lens. You've actually managed to capture this one surprisingly well; I'm guessing you used the manual focus on your camera otherwise this is rather impressive for a cannon.
I think the reason this shot didn't go further was because of its relevance to the competition. I mean, I can't think of one more adequate but people tended to go for the landscapes rather then the single shots. My point is that while this is technically a very fine photo, it seems to be lacking content as it only shows one subject that we all know very well.
Overall, the photo is great and you should be proud of it. It's one of the best moon shots I've seen with a digital camera.
Good Luck with future competitions!
