I have seen this earlier in the portrait outtakes forum, and I must say in my opinion after voting the entire challenge 80% of the entries are worse than this one. It lacks a bit of contrast tho, looks a bit washed out, it is nice and sharp a tiny little bit of curves in PS could make it much better. Anyways tehnicaly it's ok, it's expressive, it's a good portrait.

It has potential for sure. Plusses are a fine expression and some startling facial adornments. Negatives are a busy BG, blown-out wife-beater teeshirt, and an unfortunate cop on the top of the cap. The first two you can deal with in PP, the last depends on the framing of the original. There's also an overalls ense of slight fizziness to the face, possibly just an issue of no pp sharpening having been added.

Comment by marklovell:
Good pose and nice expression , like the catchlights in the eyes.

There is an odd 'halo' particularly evident by the left shoulder, but apparent all the way round the subject, that I find very distracting. I am also not sure if the same halo is affecting the ear, or if that is being affected by DoF.

I am also a little distracted by the bg. I have a good idea it's blinds, but it keeps drawing my eye away from the subject. The composition could also work a little better if it was slightly more off-centre.

The vest is a little unfortunate that it has become burnt out. - It keeps dragging my eye away from his face and saying 'whoa! HIGHlights!' As It's not gonna be a submission, could you photoshop the level of the vest down a bit?

I really like the reflections in the glasses. With the catchlights they make him seem a little less intimidating.
I think I would have prefered to see more of the tattoo on the left arm, although I am not sure whether doing that and getting the head at the same angle to cover the face as well as you have would result in an awkward pose.

All in, I think this is a good shot. It would have probably got a 6 or 7 from me, caused by the bg, that the lighting feels a bit flat (I realise in the circumstances there is probably very little you could do about that), and the composition.

Oh and also, well done. I actually hate doing portraits!

i'd have to agree... the lighting is a tad harsh for the suggestion of romance and it would look better if a bit more random in its staging...

the glare on the wine glasses and shiny shoes from the flash isnt pleasing. maybe you could try using other light source, like a fluorescent? that's my main gripe.

I think the concept is there, but the image seems a bit too contrived, like its carefully arranged to look random, but it just doesn't, it looks carefully arranged.

The black background and foreground don't help because it just makes everything seem like they're just floating in space.

A little too much to handle. I DO like how the wine glass is under the heel of the one shoe, though I would have preferred more interaction between the pearls and the wine glasses. In the back I felt that the wine glass needed more wine. I can hardly see the glass otherwise.

About the first comment: there's a little too much implied in this photo. I don't mean that in reference to the condom packages, but rather in general, though the packages do feel superfluous to this still life. Perhaps another candle to the right of the other heel and no flash at all would have made this photo more sensual and appealing than the stark, bright light. Rather than romantic it feels intrusive.

So, that's my critique. =)

I don't like this picture for many reason: 1. The lighting makes the shoes a funny orange color. 2. Nobody is dancing so it doesn't match your title. 3. Why is there a candle??? 4. CONDOMS? Geez. Can't you just leave sex out of this? 5. Why is the wine glass spilt from nder the shoe? If you spilt the wine first, and then put the shoe down, you could have picked up the wine! This just kind of grosses me out.
