you can't mask out of focus at the face with excessive softening and brightening. The focus went to the hair at the top.

cool photo, There is a nice little fish and chips shop right across the street from here.

My wife is a native of Wellington has some relatives that live just up the road from where you took this photo, and a few more up the road in Otaki. Ive been to this beach a few times and love it.

This is one of my favorites. Try doing curves (similar to what someone else in the thread mentioned, a bit of levels (bring the slider on the right over to the left a bit - lightens up her face), then sharpen. All of these will pop a whole lot more with just the sharpening, too. Here's what I did with it, using what I mentioned above:



I'm not incredibly proficient with post processing so I'm sure it can be done much better.

Good shot, I think that the DOF is great .... agreed some background is ok .. but maybe a little much here.
