Thanks everyone for the good comments. I took this shot on a street in Adams Morgan without even knowing about the contest, I was just out playing around and happened on a store display and liked the shoe. That's why the wire basket is there. I should have taken more time to get the shoe better centered and more full-frame, I didn't do any cropping on the shot.

The stand/basket (whatever that is) is distracting, and the composition could be closer to the shoe perhaps, which might let you play about with a more abstract presentation of blocks of colour and shapes like your title suggests.

Perhaps a stand without an upper rail would have looked better. And also a little more room on the left/right crop.

I think that if you have a hero item like the shoe in shot, then it needs to be all within the depth of field

I don't think the wire basket adds anything to this photo. In fact it detracts. Shoe would have had more impact outside of the basket. The background color is nice and the shoe is really pretty though.
