Hi Christine and welcome aboard. I like this shot as gulls are whole ton of fun to photo. Your choice in composition is interesting and fun. The only issue is the softness of the photo. Consider setting your camera to shutter priority, speed up your shutter,and then try the burst of 5 frames. You will likely get sharper images with birds. I also like to use my flash when relatively close. I had the S5000 knowing, when adjusted properly, it can produce wonderful results.
