Christmas Abyssby jeroweComment by ciaeagle: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Challenge: Black and white? Yep! Abstract? Yes. I recognized the railings as such but it took me a bit to figure out the boxes. I guess the holidays are well and truly over in my mind. Voting landed you about middle of the pack ... probably as the railings and boxes are a little too recognizable for a true abstract.
Image: I love how the railings are not square in the composition. The extra angles add interest and increase the abstract nature. The support beams, along with the dangling boxes help to add depth and draw the eye. My favorite piece is that there is nothing at the end of the line. Just a rectangular abyss (as you aptly named it) that allows the viewer to imagine what might be found in its depths. Details and contrasts are very nice. The depth you captured, as the railings fade away into darkness, is terrific.
In terms of constructive feedback ... You have a bit of a blow out (hot spot) on the left of the image. This may have messed with your ability to get a bit more white in the mix. The intensity of that area tends to capture attention though so something to watch out for in the future. All in all ... very creative! |

Christmas Abyssby jeroweComment by dangelic0: Excellent presentation. I might have downplayed the railing across the lower row. That brought the concrete out a bit too much for me. 6 |

Daddy's Boyby jeroweComment by sidpixel: Hello from the critique club
An appealing image that meets contributes to the open challenge well
He’s a fine handsome young chap. You’ve got a nice good sharp focus on his eyes which, as you already know, is essential for any portrait, this together with the shallow DOF helps retain our focus on him and this all works well. Personally, I think I would have tried to get a little lower down to his level, it is usually a more engaging end result rather than looking down on him. What spoils the image for me is the bright light on the top of his head, there are some clear areas there of overexposure which is a real shame especially in such a crucial area, his lovely blonde hair should be glowingly clothing his head like a crown. |

An appealing image that contributes well to the challenge
The lighting is good to the extent that it clearly defines the subjects features against the black background. I would like to see the eyes. The eyes are always such a strong draw in any portrait it would enhance the end result a lot, without them it feels a little manikin-like without soul. I take it all back! A closer inspection has revealed the eyes, that makes it work so much better now. Given how hard the eyes are to see I wonder how many others moved on before seeing themâ€Â¦?
A great mono portrait that fulfils the challenge brief well. |
