Yeah, I like the first one but I do see the problem with the shadows. That is where I think it would be better to have a light box of some sort for my flash to diffuse the light... then I could also use my reflector (with the wife's help) to bounce some light back on the other side to fill in some more. But the hot spots are a problem...

I think this one is better than the second. I like it more because I'm not a fan of the shadows from the collar. Your lighting on the second one also seems to trail off, particularly on the left side of the photo.
I like the pose in this one as well. Only quip is I'd try to soften up the light a bit more- you've got some hot spots. There are some hot spots, but you have relatively uniform lighting. Really, I think it's a pretty good product.
