This is a wonderful photo and certainly deserves more recognition! THe light and the focus are perfect, the setting exquisite and the mood, oh the mood. I think a picture like this, however, can suffer from "poor voter monitor calibration syndrome". It's possible that the face wasnt even visible for some people. Don't let the score discourage you.

this could have been a really great shot. more light catching the edge of the guy would have made him more of a focal point and given a lot more impact

I like the contrast between light/dark in this. I think there is good backlighting on the face, just enough for an outline but not enough for details.
