I get what you're doing, but it's the attention to detail that makes a portrait like this, and you've missed the potential to really, really grab the viewer with the eyes. I think the background colour is well done, but others may see it as too much because, conversely, it's not enough. There's a portrait of Jeff Goldblum with these exact colours -- a purple background and overall light with an orange gel filter -- that really works, because the colours are bold and impressive. Here, the purple is not forceful enough, and comes off as something of an afterthought, or even an error. 6
