The point is that a silhouette does not show any detail, it should only show the shape, the outline.
What you have here is a photo that is too dark (i.e. underexposed) for a "normal" subject, yet has too much detail to be called a silhouette.
If you were to underexpose this even further, you would then actually HAVE a silhouette, and a pretty interesting one at that! |

water_feature.jpgby KaveranComment by Kaveran: Thanks for the comments legalbeagle and cheerz. I actually shot quite a few different pics from different angle. My 1st thought was leading lines of the left edge rocks to the waterfall and the more I look at the pic the more I agree the plants a distraction.
This was taken about 10:00am so sun wasnt real high but there is a lot of spotty coverage and a sunny day(ie cloudless sky) made for interesting shadows and highlights. Seemed everywhere I stood there was something "in the way"
This is actually in my friends back yard, one of his two water features, this one just drops into a large pond about 12' across and the other smaller fall runs into a creek about 40' long into a pond about 10' across.
I wasnt totally prepared, didnt have tripod etc and it was later than I was hoping for decent light. I just happened to be driving by and stopped in to chat. |

Anyway, I didnt go out of my way to take this shot, it seemed to fit a silhouette (at least I thought it did) and figured it would work as a 1st challenge for me to get my feet wet and see how the whole voting process etc works. |

water_feature.jpgby KaveranComment by Matthew: I am not sure that your PP skills will get a tremendous more out of this shot. I think that a reshoot could do wonders, however. The interesting bits if the scene are the moving water, the shapes in the rocks.
The plant on the left distracts, and the fence looks awful as background. The light (critical in photography) is not great - you have burnt out highlights where the midday sun is falling - try shooting in the early evening or morning, when the light might be better.
I would recommend getting in closer to the subject matter, experimenting with some different shutter speed settings (think about using a tripod for slower speeds), and looking for interesting shapes in the rocks.
Good luck! |

Sweet Tart Spillby KaveranComment by Tlemetry: The shadows appear to be a touch noisy. I love the colors, clarity, highlights and reflection on the surface. |

Sweet Tart Spillby KaveranComment by H700256: This would have rated higher with me without the cup. Your eye pulls to the darkened center. But great concept! |
