Was this some sort of attempt to insult me? I haven't submitted anything here worth the time it took to take it. I know that. I've admitted that before. Why? Well, assigning an arbitrary number to photography, especially the stuff that's on this site, is ridiculous. I'm not about to spend two hours setting up some tacky photograph just so people can give me a 6 for "technical" when they've got no idea what they're talking about.
My point is, just because no on liked your picture doesn't make them kid haters. Maybe your picture isn't that good. Maybe in order to get better at photography you might want to recognize that its not the subject, its the style. It's not how much effort you put into it, its what you see.
Ok, for one, your background is crooked. Did you notice that? Two, you centered your subject. Three, the colors are muted, boring. There's no life to this picture. The kid doesn't give it life. The cat looks either drugged or just as bored with the picture as I am. The background is awful, also. Try a nice blank wall next time so the emphasis is on your subject, especially since this is a "portrait".
There's your criticism. Enjoy. |

My toothbrush is getting smaller!!!!by pitsamanComment by Swashbuckler: Very cute shot! Nice trick (I think...is this a printed face w/ the real toothbrush in front? But the face seems a little stretched??) Good color. Nice framing. Focus is perfect. (maybe a little closer shave? Joke!!) Very good!! 9 Swash |

OR SOME VOTERS WANT QUALITY PICTURES AND JUST BECAUSE THERE'S A CAT AND A CHILD IN THE PICTURE DOESN'T MAKE IT A QUALITY PICTURE. |

Matballs, my recipe...by pitsamanComment by jmsetzler: Greetings from the Critique Club :)
This photo makes me hungry and I'm sitting here at lunch time telling you how nice this looks instead of eating lunch :)
I think your lighting work on this shot is pretty good, but it may be just a tad bright on the top part of the frame... The shadows cast toward the bottom look fine though...
Compositionally, I would have probably made a few minor changes that could possibly create more impact... First of all, I would have spaced the saucer and the meat tray slightly farther apart to give each a little more breating room. They are a bit close together. Secondly, I would have staggered them slightly.. I would have moved the meat tray up and the saucer down just a little to create a bit more of a diagonal composition rather than a side by side view.
Another possible compositional change would have been to photograph at a little more of an angle rather than straight on. This would create a stronger sense of depth in the image...
With that being said, I think I am going to have lunch now :)
Keep up the good work!
John Setzler
