This is Kari Ann, greetings from the Critique Club:

composition: the bird is set in a good spot in the frame, right along the rule of thirds. the out of focus weeds in front also help to the composition by filling up the negative space.

color:vibrant and rich, great work

contrast: good, not overpowering, but enough to separate the subject from the background

focus: sharp and awesome.

depth of field: shallow depth of field was used beautifully here, sets the subject off just enough

lighting: a little bit harsh on the birds neck and head.

other: overall, a well accomplished photo of a hard to capture bird. I think what may have been your downfall is entering just another bird shot. Try looking through all past winning bird photos. They mostly depict the animals in movement, or at an interesting angle. But props on the find, its a beautiful bird. I hope to see more of your Africa Shots, your donig great so far. If you have any other questions, you are more then welcome to PM me.

This is Kari Ann, greetings from the Critique Club:

composition: the women is placed very well in the frame, she sits along a great intersection in the Rule of Thirds, taking my eyes right to her upon opening. Also, the beach adds a good leading line.

color: As stated before, the blues are a little overpowering. Maybe if she were wearing another color besides the same blue of her outfit, she would have popped out more, and the blues could have been laid off a bit.

contrast: good contrast overall, everything it set off nicely.

focus: nice focus on the subject, can plainly tell the women is the main focus.

depth of field: A deeper depth of field should have been used. In this case, the sand is out of focus, and thats the main theme of the challenge.

lighting:
I like the lighting. Perhaps next time you can wait a little longer till sunset or near sunset, that way the blues will be a broader range, and the lighting will be more diversified, not so flat.

other:
for me, this is an average photo yearning to be above average. I think with a few little tweaks in timing, clothing, and aperture could have really set this out from the pack. So with that being said, i hope you'll take the advice of others and keep up the shooting! You've got the eyes for sure to see photographic potential. i hope this critique helped you. if you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

Suggestion: try a levels adjustment to reduce the haziness and possibly a warm up filter to add to the impression of heat - good luck

Pretty good idea. Maybe a tighter crop of the bow, the dogs and a bit of sea. seems underexposed, as well.

nice.....but don't think much striking....colors are good, but i feel if the color of dogs could be black-white then it would look more balanced...
