Certainly has more impact this way -- but I would crop it just a little bit less than you did (ie don't crop the bottom at all, and then crop the top to match the bottom)

I'd crop so that the fans are equidistant from the eyes. You could do that up down black frame that seems to be so in now. LOVE those eyes.
