blimey, that was a surprise!

i just realised i didn't leave any comments when i submitted this, so just in case you're wondering a few particulars are as follows:

the liquid in the full glass is "purple herbal" fairy (dishwashing) liquid

lighting comprised of a torch

background is an A3 sheet of red paper.

the final picture is the 96th of a 100 odd attempts, with some minor works to curves, cropping and neat image (wonderful software that).

can't think of anything else. anyway, thanks to all you splendid peoples for the nice comments. and yay! i'm quite royally pleased with meself.

Where The Heart Is

I have lived here all my life, and you know what, i don't think i ever saw the sky-line like this from this side of the river before - at least not docklands and the mill dome in the same view (i am SO used to seeing them the other side to each other that this view is entirely alien to me...) i've been to ally pally once, but twas hazy so I missed out on this great view. only guessing, but i think that must be shooters hill behind the dome (other side of which i used to live). this is a terrific first submission - i love how rich the greens came out.

WOWSER! where on (or off) earth was this taken? this is a fab picture... i do personally prefer the bottom half though - i think the expanse of water and the landmass in the background is a little surplus. if i were you i might have been inclined to take advantage of the great detail you've captured on the buildings and focus on them. it almost looks like a real screenshot from simcity! i love the closest buildings. what city is this? v. good - 8.

No doubt joining the unseen bandwagon, but you should have done this for the proportion challenge... It's kind of cute. did you try the same set up indoors? I only ask because the whiteness on the near shaker is a little too intense - indoors you could control the lighting a bit and with darker lighting, might have picked up a granular appearance of the salt. you have done a good job of hiding from the reflective chrome surfaces though - i quite impressed by that. 7.

I really like this one a fair bit. the choice of location is brilliant, the lighting really urban and the shape of the tunnel draws your attention to the centre subject. this would be perfect for the new members challenge. i think i would have tried again with a slightly shorter exposure so we can see the ball a little better - without the titles guidance it's unclear as to what's happening. however, the B&W works really well, and in all, very very likeable. hope it does well - 8.

The red lighting is a decent part of this picture, but it is unfortunate that the long exposure (or however you got the ghost effect) kind of diminishes the impact. it's very difficult to determine what's going on. indeed there seems to be too much. neatimage would reduce the amount of noise in the picture (the kind of speckly effect) and it might have improved if you opted to focus more on the girl or the lad on the left...

Interesting alternative to a seemingly site favourite effect-type shot... using a picture of the earth is a good idea - however, the droplets don't to me appear large or frequent enough to have a great startling impact. the image of the earth is very clear - i initially thought the place you'd never been before was outer space! overall, the concept is good, the actual carrying out not as WOW as it might have been... 5.

This is very very lovely. The colours are immediately striking, and the out-of-focus beautiful blue vase cvompliments the image perfectly. border is good! a stunningly gorgeous picture - 9.

Don't know what it is, but i normally hate baby shots. it's a matter of principal perhaps, it's kind of a cross between blatant showing off, usually of snapshot quality and a dire lack of originality with no evidence of forethought. whereas this is completely opposite to the norm and is totally fantastic. truly, the only great baby shot ever. The expression on the sprog is, though a bit on the mad / insane side, is riotuous and fantastic. Also, technically, the quality of the shot is one of the best of the week. Getting a living thing this sharp and clean is very difficult (i find), and this is flawless. 9.

This was only one of two 10s i awarded this week. For something seemingly simple, i found the image very striking and particularly appealing. the red is very bold and the lighting from the side is very effective. The white walls are brilliantly bare, and quite frankly, the whole thing is a joy to behold. I have a tiniest slight reservation about the sign, but that can't really be helped, and the way you cropped it makes the sign not very overbearing. very excellent picture.
