From a technical standpoint, this shot is REALLY TOUGH to do correctly. Fire and water moves incredibly quick and in situations such as this you need to be on your toes. Judging from the water drops and the flame; the camera was already cranked at a fairly high ISO and the shutter speed was high. So my hats off to the photographer who took this and let's take a look at the technical aspects.

I've already mentioned that the shutter speed was fairly high, this is able to be seen at the water drops on the left hand side dripping (almost not blurred). The DOF was really good and focused right behind the firefighters and included them. The fire provides a good source of backlighting and the reflective strips on the uniforms provide the added light to prevent the firefighters from disappearing into shadow land. Well done on this photo shoot.

I pray that no body was hurt during this emergency.

This is a great example of backlighting!! The two lights make for a good example of how to get it done. I think the DOF could be a little closer, but it may also be the light playing tricks on my eyes. Good job on a job well done.

I liked this photo, because it captures something simple that we all see yet we never pay attention to. The definition inside of the dew drops is really awesome and the glittery sunspots really work for this shot. My preference for this would be for a little larger DOF, yet what you have done here works wonders. Congradulations!!

I strougled with this picture. Technically speaking the picture is good, and has good lighting qualities. I see the light in the background, and I know that it is providing fill. Yet I can't really see how the light is providing any real assistance in this picture. Going back to the rules of the contest it says "Backlighting is the idea of shining light at an object from behind, or lighting areas behind the object you want to highlight." This being said I don't see how the emphasis has been changed or altered because of the lighting. So I scored it lower because I felt it didn't go with the contest.

I like the picture in general; although, I think it doesn't go with the contest. The contest says "Backlighting is the idea of shining light at an object from behind, or lighting areas behind the object you want to highlight." While this definately does show a dominate source of light, it doesn't show anything that I know as a backlight.

Very nicely done. You've got a good DOF and a good focal point. A bit of a glare on the bottom orange detracts a bit. (It's nothing that couldn't be cured in the long run with a little bit of burning, but that is outside the scope of the contest.) I really like the way the difraction of the light occurs as it goes through the glass and liquid. Once again nicely done.

Now this is backlighting!! I wish more people would bother to take a look at all the images and see this example. The hair like strands on the pods are nicely done and you can even make out the legumes forming in the pod!!
Well done.

Perhaps next time try to see if you can get the top of the pods/bottom of the vine to show up a little better. This would prevent the blackness of the background from melting into that area and detracting from it.

I've always like pictures of leaves, because they display a graceful pattern which is impossible to replicate by my hands. That being said, I'm trying to determine how this is showing it being backlit.

(Of course in Judging the picture I can't see your comments on how this was done, or anything else about you for impartiality on the judging.)

Since you submitted the leaf, I can only assume that it was lit from behind and we're looking through the leaf. This being said, it's amazing. Would you mind telling us how you achieved this effect and what type plant if comes from? Thanks.

I liked the effect of the mosture glistening on the fruit still. After looking at the picture a while it's hard to tell if the bottom slice is a bit washed out because of the light or the DOF was very small. In any rate it really doesn't detract from the picture. All in all Nicely done!

Nice idea. Perhaps a different background instead of the glaring white.
This would then enhance the definition of the flowers.
