Yes, very good idea to photo for me. Mechanical genre for sure. Outstanding objects, put together into an outstanding composition. No doubt for me: 10
Technical:
BG unique and black, perfect. Sharpness very good, some minor issues with halos, but might be due to submission. Contrast and density are very convincing here, the chrome is a hard and tough thing, moderate lack of 'black'/'very dark' areas on the corkscrew itself. A black card very close at the left might have helped a lot. But the corkscrew has still enough 'touch' and 'form'. Also the drops and the liquid are well balanced frozen and blurred - good value of dynamic/speed and frozen details, excellent for me. Distracting the viewable brighter areas within the darker BG, also at the right above corner. That might be due to a not full compensation within the layers, if not by retouch, it should have for sure be copied out, removed by retouch. Crop and compositional aspects are good, but not fully convincing me, 'cause the lack of some virtual guiding thirds etc.
To come short: 8
Expression/Impact: More than enough for me, so 10

Obvious mechanical genre. A pitty such photos of 'open' clocks are widely spread and somewhat 'overseen', while still very popular 'cause fascinating. Luckily choosen a very interesting exponent of such watches! So for me a 4 for theme/object and interest.
Technical:
Very good crop and a close POV, paired with the good macro-view, are guiding the viewer's view slightly through the turbulent and many objects itself. Although it is hard to catch one clear object of interest, the composition is lead by slight diagonals.
Sharpness appeals good, with the choosen contrast very fine details of the different structures are viewable, thus important here. The colors are helping for differentation too. The choosen time value works very well for me, showing some dynamic movement on the balance-wheel, not too static.
The very close to blown contrast value at the left side does slightly decrease the overall good technical factors for it. I would rate it technically: 6
Expression/Impact:
It has done one, at least towards me, because if not, i would have not rated and commented it.
Also i took this one out of the others. Why? Ye, because the compositional and technical merits here had made my vote for this photo. Some other photos with the same objects were nice too, but not as expressive than this.
It does not 'rock me off my socks' but it does have its fasciantion, so 7 points.

| 12/31/2004 09:26:53 AM | I'm Going Slightly Madby TranquilComment: Very good submission for me, perfectly fitting into the 'hidden faces' theme and genre. Title: "I'm Going Slightly Mad" excellent telling wording for the photo! Excellent!
Composition and idea: Very good seen and with retouche a good composition made out of it. Very helpful the B/W toning, reducing distracting 'sides' outside the 'face' itself, BG etc.
The position of the 'eyes' screws are perfect and i am also absolutely pleased with the 'mouth' screws too. So also very good abstracted, to say a playful incarnation of forms, cirlces and squares. Additionally the 'light' decrease from above towards the bottom implies the 'going mad' - Hello :)) would rate it very good work! | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 12/30/2004 08:52:27 PM | winterby heidaComment: Hi heida, that one rocks! Sharpness and contrast working, the almost monochrome color of 'blue' expresses the cold very impressive for me. Also the composition is very appealing, with the plant arising straigt from the corner and 'flowing' into the whole frame. Strange, but interesting, the 'rotation' of the photo here. Greets! | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 12/30/2004 08:44:44 PM | Wanna fight? by NazgulComment: Ahh, with my second comment a 'two cats' photo. Yes, for me real two beautiful, cute and nice kitten. The motive itself a 'heart-breaker' with those sweet two objects. But the image quality with the turn towards a B/W one rocks, too. Density and contrast are very pleasing for a digital converted B/W. Sharpness good with showing nice details in the fur. DOF a bit narrow, especially on the girl's eye, but with keeping in mind the already low shutter speed of 1/80, better shoot with it, than miss the whole emotive moment. Ah, yes, forgot the crop - a real helpful narrow one here! So it's a real winner, at least a pure 'heart-winner'! Greets!
