Greetings from the critique club,

something in this picture does not work for me, i can't really put my finger on it:

technically , your BW conversion is perfect, and the focus is great.
but the composition really hurt the image in my opinion, a wider angle perhaps would have given this more impact, the focus is too much on the manequin (who is lifeless).
But as i am gazing at the shot, my eye gets pulled to the man walking on the right side, and i wonder what's the story and what's the link. i read the title i get it, but then the manequin is not looking at anything, the man is completly off the field of view. so i think it would have been better if there was a person in front of the store, and you composed your shot to include him , that also could have had more impact.

as for content , you have a great idea, and with a better execution(composition) i think this could have scored much higher.

hope that comment was helpfull,

cheers,

Hassan

Greetings from the critique club,

let me first say this, once a picture hits the 6 domain, it means it'a great shot.

this is a great outtake on the challenge, the fact that there is no streets, YET it's a street photography shot due to the fact that this is what they use in vietnam gave you an edge over the rest of the shots in the challenge.

technically speaking the picture is very well composed, good focus with vibrant colours, so there is nothing i can tell you about this except great job.

as for the shot itself, i think you could have pushed your score by at least 0.5 if:
1) the shot was in BW, (for me i think it does not matter) but from what i've noticed for DPC masses street photog=BW, just check the top 3:)

2) the story you are conveying, some shots in this challenge are good and don't have a story (which is what street photog, is all about). yours does, it conveys the living style of some of the vietnamese communities, but it does not leave a mark on the viewer. for example if you look at the winner, it really gets to you the contrast of lifestyle shown in it, and it makes you wonder. looking at your shot,as a DPC voter, yes i see the message , cool lifestyle, votes 6 and move on.

i hope this critique was helpfull,
you have a good portfolio, looking forward to seing more of your work,

cheers,
Hassan

greetings from the critique club,

let me first by saying Dex the quality the D200 is producing is sensational!

technically this shot has nothing wrong with it , the colors are vivid, good focus, composition...

but i feel that the reason why the people voted it down (In my opinion) was the following,
1) black and white conversion, usually street photography correlates with BW, i don't think so personally but a lot of people do.
2) there is no clear story to what to the man is doing, and this is the hear of street photography.

nevertheless, the quality of the pic is quite impressive.

hopefully that was helpfull!
GO team D50!

cheers

Greetings from the critique club,

i have to say, when i looked at this image i could not tell why you got 5.6 on it and not a higher score. the picture is technically great.
the Black and white conversion is superb, the contrast is nice, the composition is good.

but then i realized something, this picture does not have a story, which is the heart of street photography. in other words, it does not intrigue the viewer, or convey a message(in my opinion of course).
and i think this is what was the dowfall of this shot.

hope this critique was helpfull,

cheers,

Hassan

Contrast between old friends.

Greetings from the Critique Club

First of all congratulations on a new PB.

i am going to list the pros and the cons of the picture in my opinion of course:

pros:
when i first looked at it, the shot made me wonder on what's the story behind these two , are they friends, are they foes, are they stranger.
and this is what a good street photographer should do (in my opinion of course) , be able to intrigue the viewer, and you def. achieved that in your shot.
as far as technical stuff go the composition is good , and focus is perfect.

cons:

like one of the commenters said, the tree in the back is distracting, it pulls you away from both person. perhaps you could have added a layer to blur more the background.
the black and white conversion needs some work, the colors are a bit flat, more contrast would have def. gave this more impact, probably playing more with curves, or brightness/contrast.
finally, althought the shot intrigues the viewer, it lacks the candid factor and i think that's what hurt your score the most.

overall i think you did a great job, a 5.7 is a good score here at DPC, hope you keep it up.

cheers,

Hassan
