Birds fly where and when they fly; I can't control the sky. Settings were for something else; the ducks just flew up out of nowhere and I pointed and clicked; I was surprised the shot was as good as it was, under those conditions. Granted, comments are valid, as far as they go, especially the one about the sensor dust, which I just did not see, but generally show no understanding or appreciation for wildlife. If a cosmetic blemish is more important than the subject, something is dramatically wrong. I think I'm wasting my time in here, to be honest. I'll just go back to taking shots that please me, without worrying about pleasing anyone else, on a fake schedule such as this site requires. In short, as President Abraham Lincoln put it, "People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like."

this would have been better for me if the sky was more interesting.

Sorry to tell you but your pictures does not have a lot of impact. While the triangular formation is a good choice by itself, a more intersting background or boosting the saturation of the sky could change your photo completely. A faster shutter speed would freeze the motion of the birds and would show more details. THe way you present the birds is just blured, and does not create the impression of intentional motion blurness. You could have removed the sensor dust in the lowere right corner (even in basic editing)

not sharp, not really a silhoutte, weird blotch in the corner, boring sky.
get your things in focus (unless the softness is intentional to add to the photo) then worry about the rest.

"few people paid attention to the topic"? In a Free Study" there is no topic. The Advanced editing rules say "You MAY use filters etc.", not "You should" or "You must". "using the rules to the full extent" ? That does not guarantee a good result, as we can see here. There isn't a single trace of photography left. I didn't vote on this because i thought it would be DQed anyway for use of special effects filters or for being literal artwork. if i had voted, it would have been a 1 (which i give out rarely), and I suspect the 9-voter was a troll.

Hi Jim,

read your comments in the forum but this image is really poor...excessive editing and special effects filters just don't go well in dpc. When you look at the quality of the best shots taken here and then look at this, it is no wonder it scored a 3.3. I am not being mean, just stating the facts for you for the future.

It is quite obvious that very few people really paid any attention to the topic. Either that, or I completely misunderstood it, but if so, I'm not alone, as there were a few others who took the Advanced Editing Rule to heart and used it to the full extent. The fact that just about every one of those shots which had effects work done on them got low marks can only mean that the vast majority of the voters either didn't bother to read the Rules, or didn't care. Sad, really...

There was one comment which had value: "A little more clarity and this could have potential." I can see the point being made. The effect I was going for was that of a pencil sketch of a deadbolt. I added the grain to heighten the contrast, but I might have overdone it.

I also appreciate the '9' that I got; at least one voter understood what I was trying to do: thanks!
