You're right, it could had scored better than the other shot..

A point to note is the direction of where the eagle is looking. I think it'll be better to give more "space" in the direction the subject is looking at. This would make the photo more impactful and leave the audience a sense of perspective in relating to the subject.

For this shot, if you could have cropped the eagle to be on the left of the photo as it's looking towards the right.
(Ps.. Too much empty spaces on the left)

I'm sorry but.. I didn't get the subject of the photo..
is it the leaf or the petal..
Its a little too confusing for me.. :)

Having said that.. I would still use this photo as a wallpaper or even as an "interview-photo" to get the candidate interpret the photo as to what they make out of it..
It's pretty "thought" provoking!

Been fun looking at it.. :)
