I think I liked the look of the facial hair better :)

Nice funny idea, but I'm not sure about the very plain background for. Perhaps it 's the lightness.. I dunno.

Anyway, keep it up. I'm watching :)

From your thread, here's my take:

#1 - Selective Desat/blur Unless it is done really well, very subtly, and has a strong reason (other than to simply differentiate your subject from a cluttered background), it's going to score poorly. Your shot was, quite simply, none of these things. Yes, I understand that not every shot can be taken with the subject against a non-cluttered background, but there are things that can be done to minimize such things. As for the technicals.. they are done pretty well, but they are still pretty glaring. People notice that it's fake. I certainly did, and that's a sure way to a 5 (or 4)

#2 - Subject. People wanted to see fire. You have a tiny flame that is pretty much obliterated by the rest of the photo. I suspect that for many, it's a weak connection to the challenge, and probably screams "shoehorn!".. no matter how unintentionally.

#3 - Overall Pop. There really isn't one. What is there because of your processing is actually taken away by.. your processing. It's too noticeable, and the only real pop you have going here is the fact that your subject is the only one in color. It's simply not enough.

Be thankful you got as many 6s as you did, and that there weren't more 4s. As it is.. most people gave you the benefit of the doubt and gave you a mid line score. I would have probably done the same, had I voted.

The more time spent worrying about being "Like the Pros", the less time you have for capturing something *real*

This shot is all about the real.. The moment.

We all dream of shots like this.

Welcome to DPC.. where people's assumptions are law.

I'm sorry that something so fresh and vulnerable needed to be seen as something disturbing or horrific.

Human nature maybe, but for me, there are far better ways to word things than throwing in assumptions or outright negative opinions. (aren't attractive or something to highlight is an *extremely* subjective viewpoint.. could have been worded much more sensitively).

Anyway.. I'm ranting now, but it starts to get old in this community.

Cheers for having strength and courage with this shot, and showing a vulnerable moment that you obviously feel is something worth sharing.

hahaha... This might be my favorite of your work so far.
Fantastic lighting.. (even if DPCers would blah blah blah about highlights.)

I'd personally put this shot above the blue ribbon winner.

Why? It's more abstract.. for one. The blue ribbon is about as abstract as the decimal system.

Your color play is unreal.. and I think the *one* thing that I think you could have done differently was cleaned the mirror better.

A fabulous shot that clearly beats my own submission (which beat you in the standings.. *HUH?!*) by 30,000,000 miles.
