It's been one year since I first laid eyes on this site. I submit to you that those eyes are not the same eyes that I have today. My new eyes see things much diffenently. They see light, texture, and contrast where I once saw only action.
Photography has given me new eyes, and those eyes have made photography a consuming passion. I am obsessed with trying to capture and share what my new eyes see.
I don't ride my 4 wheelers anymore. Instead, I'm inclined to search the net for the name of an insect I've spotted. I don't go to the gym, I drive for hours to take pictures (If you were behind me, I apoligize. I used to drive fast to). I don't watch TV, I read photography books. My new video game - it's called "UPDATE".
Sure I've learned about F stops, aperature, curves, and the circle of confusion, but somehow, I've also learned the names of flowers, insects, trees, roads, and buildings. I've discovered nature, history, and culture. Photgraphy has changed more than my eyes, it has changed me.
My pursuit to capture and share has led to the purchase of 2 cameras, 2 tripods, 1 monopod, 4 lenses, 2 flash units, 2 camera bags, a mat cutter, 50 frames, a dozen books, software and more.
The best $25 I've spent, has been joining this site.
To me, photography boils down to this - Can you capture an image that causes the viewer to feel some thing about your subject. In essence, can you share a feeling. Hunger, fear, joy, beauty, sorrow, etc., can you express it in an image? This exchange of feeling is what I enjoy most about this site. Of course the recognition or approval of fellow photographers, specially ones that you admire, is gratifying. But I enjoy looking at images and understanding the photographer. I appreciate the opportunity to be understood.
Thank you all for the advise, instruction and feedback.
Happy Holidays
Eric

Fantastic post - I hope everyone reads this. I know that it has changed my life in the same ways, and without DPC, it wouldn't have.

If anyone who has submitted photos for challenges, or been a regular visitor here can say that they still think and look at things in the same way, they have a problem.
It is not always possible to capture exactly what we feel at the time in a photograph, but we do it for ourselves. Hopefully, that feeling can be transmitted to others.
It's not always the sterile studio shot that captures the imagination, but the spontaneous shot of a beautiful subject. I hope we all take photos that inspire us, whether or not they are challenge winners. |

I certainly see things differently, but my eyes are now worn out pressing that damn 'UPDATE' button and watching the numbers slowly fall ;-)
Great post.

I will never be a professional photography, I don't want to be.
But it is my hobby and It is for my own personal enjoyment.
I love sharing my interest with others.
I love it when someone learns something new and will share it with me.
DPC is set as my home page, It is where is spend my spare time,
I also enjoy the hummer in some of the threads.
It is my opinion that this is the best site on the world wide web!
