It's a gaggle of geese. Geez... do we have to explain EVERYTHING?

If you make a statement that makes no sense, yes, please.

Maybe we both should go back and read all the posts and then read the informative links that were provided before we submit a challenge photo.

Yeah, i provided one of those links in the beginning of the thread.

I think i'll just pass on this challenge, even though i love doing this kind of shots. It seems it would be judged on wrong basis or with certain prejudiced and/or misinformed approaches, like the staged shots issue in the hidden faces challenge. I'll just wait for something better defined.

Thanks, again, for posting the link.
I hope that you decide to submit to this challenge. I think it's going to produce some of the best shots ever. Think how happy you'd be if you get another ribbon in a technical challenge like this one!

Chalk up another challenge I won't be entering.

The S7000 just doesn't do backgrounds well.. *period*.. let alone be a camera that can get me some decent bokeh.

fleh.

Artyste,

Ditto the Nikon I'm using, which is very similar to your camera. I couldn't get those artefacts if my life depended on it. However, that ain't gonna stop me from entering; I do a LOT of photography that uses intense, gaussian natural backgrounds to a very similar effect, minus the artefactual presence, and I am going to do one like that and see how it fares. It seems int he spirit of the thing, and I refuse to be cowed by these gonzos with their Big Glass. jejejeĆ¢„Ā¢

A great big thank you too each and everyone contributing to this thread.Just thinking about it, this is by far one of the nicest learning experiences I personally had on this site. We don't have to agree with all and everyone, but surely we can learn from all. Best of luck, surely I will need it... ;-)

I think you're selling your 5700 short. i still have mine and am tempted to either go thru and find some or go take some new ones with it. you've hurt my cameras feelings. :)

Pedro,

By and large I like the fact that my 5700 is "clean"... But if yoiu can find a way to get true bokeh with yours, please share :-)

The are going to be two main elements when I will be considering photos for this challenge:

1) Is the primary element of the shot (the subject) cleanly shot and is it an interesting and compelling image?

and (probably more important than in other challenges with shallow depths of field)

2) What is the quality of the bokeh? Is it clean and smooth or blocky and rough? Are their blown out highlights, etc?

I know I will be according much more attention to the bokeh than I usually do (duh).

Just a thought.

wide open aperture, step way back, zoom way in :) Just like I'd do it with my D70 :)

i'll try some with it this week. maybe I'm out to lunch.

Does it meet the challenge?

Oh, Pedro;

I know that part. My point is that the cam doesn't produce really interesting bokeh when I do that. More like what we're seeing in berenguer's shot, kind of wimpy, insignificant bokeh. NOTHING like these humungous, sparkling, out-of-this world bokeh we're seeing from the Big Glass peoples...

More bokeh... Moodville style. ;-)

Is this bokeh ?

Not really, peecee; the BG has to take a much more active role in the total image, IMO.

Judging by the results of the soft focus challenge, a winning image in the bokeh challenge will look very similar to this. Perhaps with a little more technical quality, though.
01/04/2005 11:20:51 AM · #146
How would this do ? The background "mirrors" the foreground detail but there are no spherical aberations.

I'm still confused after reading this thread. (But I think less confused.) Would this be an example of bokeh?

Thanks-

This is a great challenge.. I just shot my first idea and although it shows 'bokeh' it is also a really boring picture... well it is there until I get to shoot something new (if I get time!)

I came across this picture which would be a great entry for this challenge.. now if I could just fly to South Korea!

Sure, and it has a very nice three-dimensional quality as well.

While I appreciate the artistry in a good bokeh shot, my preference is f/64 (figuratively speaking) and perfect DOF to infinity. Ansel Adams is my hero! Don't think I will enter this one.
