Wal-Mart greeter fired over semi-naked picture:

I hear americans here and abroad (when i say abroad i mean mainland USA) :-D say "oh! Americans are sexually tolerant don't have a problem with sex and nudity and yada yada yada." This is not true. America is one of the most intolerant, close minded(est) countries about sex in the world! (so we have sex on tv shows and movies) but when this kinda of stuff shows up in the real world we blow our freaking minds! two examples....

just this week a Wal-Mart employee was fired because too many customers were *shocked* and *offended* by seeing a picture a door greeter had which showed of a *semi-naked man, wearing nothing but a plastic bag over his *you know who* with the door greeter saying they were cutting back on prices, and this was their new uniform.....this man was 65 years old and not a pervert.....he was just trying to make customers smile....

example two:
one word: the janet jackson superbowl incidenet (okay two words)

BOTH these stories were on CNN! can you believe that CNN! CNN should be reserved for real stories (to include me!) and not everytime someone see's a breast or chest of a man......come on! i've been places where they have hardcore sex bondage shops right next to kitchen and cleaning sections (for real) and its not a big deal.....so jump over the stick and grow up! that person doesn't deserve to get fired....what of his family and little kid? i know you say, "well he should of thought of what he did" if you are offended by something tell that person don't go report it to the president of the united states.....you have to be direct otherwise the person will have no idea you feel that way!

:-D

i think your post is not really inviting discussion, but more of a "rant" therefore, i am going to move it to rants.

It could be an interesting discussion though!

I'm not completely sure of the context, but as the manager I would have no choice but to fire this guy either. I'm not particularly uptight, but if my job was to manage a store and maintain it's image in the community I couldn't have my greeters showing photos some people might not appreciate at the door. That's common sense.

The difference here is that when I walk into Shlongpleaser's Sex Emporium I expect to see boobage, but not when I'm watching the Superbowl.

However, I do agree that the decisions made by CNN as to which stories receive airtime seem to be more based on selling a product rather than delivering the news.

Edit: I should clarify one of the sentences above...please don't assume that I do in fact walk into Shlongpleaser's Sex Emporium!

I personally believe that there is a time and place for everything. However, nudie pics at the workplace is a common sense no no. If I'd seen that on the internet or on the street someplace, sure, maybe I'd laugh, but not at work and definitely not if I was a customer in the store that it was being shown off in. There are other ways to be made to laugh and smile.
As far as the Janet thing goes, I think that was blown totally out of porportion. One look at daytime TV and any TV show at night and you'd see more than what Janet showed.

My question would be is the poor old man allowed to show up at work in such a state of undress? It would follow that if that isn't allowed, showing pictures of said "uniform" wouldn't be allowed either. And I would question whether he was some kind of pervert. Do you carry around nude pictures of yourself and show them to perfect strangers? Even on this web site, that is dedicated to photography, you have to warn people that a nude picture is going to be shown.

Knowing that 99% of "Red America" shops there, touting a picture of a semi-naked man was probably not the smartest thing for a Wal-Mart greeter to do. I do agree, however that Americans as a whole tend to be prudish, but have to disagree with your rant on CNN's news judgment. Not a real story? Come on! It's obviously enough of a hot-button issue to get you riled up!
