How do you pronounce it? Is it bow-ka?

Bow-keh

:)

But there's still no 'h' in the original Japanese. That's been added by us westerners.

That's "bow" as in "bow tie", not as in "My daddy wouldn't buy me a bow-wow." It rhymes with "okay", but the vowels are shorter.

What do you think about this one? I took it with my Nikon Coolpix 5400. I know it is not a big camera ...

Should you be able to discern what the background is? I took a shot that I thought might work, but I'm concerned that the bokeh areas might be too clear. Is it the more out of focus the better? I am among the slightly confused on this one.

To those of you who have a clear idea on this one, let me say thanks very much for the patience you've shown in trying to make it clear to the rest of us!

I'm in the camp of some others in that I don't think good bokeh is about points of light, although that can be a nice effect (it can also be a distraction). I think it's about a visual smoothness that allows the subject to "pop" while providing an astheticly pleasing, out-of-focus background. I think for this challenge, the background has to be a visible part of the image, in other words, if your main subject fills 90% of the image, there may not be enough background remaining to make a judgement on the quality of the bokeh. At least, this is the way I will vote in this challenge.
