Started at 6.7 and has steadily gone down since. Still, better than I thought it would do. |

Check this out. I just got a comment on my entry that the backgroud was blurry and that it was hard to tell what it (the background) was. And my score dropped from a 6.4 to a 6.3915 at about the same time. Newbee. It would have taken about a 1 for one vote to do that if that is what happened. |

ROFL! It probably had little blobs in it, too. |

What's worse; blurry bokeh or blobby bokeh? |

If I see any picture with blurry bokeh or blobby bokeh I'll give em a 1. I want to see good sharp, well focused bokeh. Make sure you set them cameras at f/8.

Woe is me,,, finally I realize what I did wrong,,,Live and learn I guess... How could I even begin to think that both blurry and blobby bokeh could co-exist.... I feel so so ashamed............Please forgive me.....(goes to hide in a corner and seeks forgiveness for erring so badly) |

I was at 5.1...been sliding ever since.
My Movie Title is also sliding...it is getting irritating, this sliding downhill bit.

I had high hopes to be above 6 with this one, but both Movie Titles and Bokeh are in the 5.8-5.9 range. Oh well, maybe Best of 2004.
I'm amazed at how many more votes I've gotten in Movie Titles than Bokeh. Don't forget to vote in Bokeh, people!

I think this will be one of the highest scoring challenges ever. Take it from mister average, when I'm doing very well, there's bound to be lots better above me. Good luck all!!

Andi Movie Titles is an open challenge so all registered and full members can enter and vote, in Bokeh only full members can enter and vote so there will always be fewer voters in a members challenge.

I am getting really tired of the comments that state that the blurry background doesn't "qualify" as bokeh... the discription of the challenge says "Technique Challenge: Loosely defined, bokeh is the quality and "feel" of the out-of-focus foreground or background elements of a photo. It isn't very interesting by itself, but take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background."
According to this, the "blurry" background DOES, DOES, DOES qualify!!!
Sorry... ranting... as I watch my score decline :P |

Just a personal opinion, but I think a blurry background alone does not equate to bokeh. I believe if things in the background are still recognizable then the bokeh effect hasn't been fully executed. Why? Because items that are recognizable draw the eye away from the subject. And that's the whole idea, to deliniate the subject from the background. In the meantime, my entry doesn't really do this, but it is doing fairly well. So what do I know?

i've seen too many uneeded, blurry, points of light in this set of images. in keeping with the above post - i think these distract from the subject as much as semi-blurry items do...
i think the description of how to tell good boken from bad boken has been taken to mean that, that IS bokeh. personally i disagree with that.

What about background that's so completely blurred it looks "solid" (even though it isn't). I used that to make my foreground "pop", which to me (but apparently not to voters) is Bokeh. |

You're probably correct, but these circles of light or confusion can be incorporated into your composition without being distracting, or even enhance the composition. Many of the entries I voted highly had this quality but not all. Like all challenges, the mostly pleasing image will win in the end, no matter if it is "text book" this or that or not.

I would consider such an effect a fine Bokeh in the context of this challenge and rate it accordingly well, if the part of the image which is not Bokeh is equally worth looking at.

You have a good point Neil but your good technique was probably lost on the voters, I guess because it didn't hit them (us) in the face. I think people were looking for the tell-tale signs of bokeh, ie. circles of confusion, non-discript blurry forms, etc. I'm sure in any other challenge you would have seen a full point difference in your score judging by the great quality of your other shots. :) Good luck.
