Great discussion. Would anybody like to start a photoblog or community of some sort for dpcers who are:
a) working in journalism or documentary photography
OR
b) have a passion and a serious ambition to work towards doing so?
We would make a commitment to not pussy out of the pictures I pussied out of this morning, we would encourage each other and we could show samples of our work and critique each other's photos/captions as well as celebrate successes.
Only for those who are serious or knowledgeable (don't have to be both, but at least one of the two) about documentary/press photography.
If this is something you'd like to do, I started a yahoo group that you can join here:

Ever hosted a party and nobody showed up? :0)
Just a bump in case anyone's interested in occasional discussion and critiques of documentary and journalistic photography...I started a group at the link in the post below this one for those dpcers who are really aspiring to grow in this area or for those who already do this for a living...

There were times in my life when I actually thought I might like to be a photojournalist, but I have proven to myself time after time that I am not cut out for this line of work.
An example of this is when Ivan hit down here back in September. Ivan was the worst Hurricane to hit this area since 1906. The damage it did to this town was astounding. At first light my son and I went out to check on our friends. Phones were down and the cells didn't work either so we decided to go to the their houses. The eye had passed less then 2 hours before, the winds were still gusting over 60 mph, and trees and branches were still coming down. It looked like a bad day in Bagdad. Crushed houses, power lines and trees all across the roads and the branches of the trees that were standing were in many cases stripped bare.
If I ever had any talent for photojounalism it would have come out then. It didn't. Niether did my camera. It staid behind the seat of my truck while my son and I helped cut trees out of the roads. For two weeks my chainsaw was in my hands more then my camera. The only reason I did ever bring it out was when someone asked to photograph the damage for insurance. Everyone has a different calling. Photojounalism isn't mine.

It was something I considered in college - but it didn't make sense for a married fella to travel so much. |

I'm in. I signed up tonight. Maybe it (the association and the practice) will help us chickens step up and take some more shots!

Why would you want to start a different group for it?
I'm not a 'photojournalist' but I have been exposed to enough of it lately that I have started to gain a rather firm grip on it.
Want to get together here and shoot some 'practice' assignments?

Hi John, I just wanted to take some initiative in committing myself to learn and interact more...if we can do that in the context of dpc that's great, I just thought that it's easy for a thread to die away and for people to forget about it...if we're getting emails and photographs to critique on a weekly (or so) basis it would keep us on our toes.
What do you think?

I'm not a huge fan of the Yahoo groups... They don't provide a reasonable way to 'comment' on a photograph, but their message board is ok. I have a yahoo group of my own for our local digital camera club.
