Nikon Coolpix 5700 has a $150 rebate brings it to $549 at DBuys

The Canon Powershot pro1 is nearing the $550 mark, and super macro mode on that one rocks.

The Panasonic FZ1 and FZ20 takes good micro pictures.
1) FZ1 from 4 ft. way using Micro Mode

2) FZ1 Micro Mode

3) FZ20 Micro Mode from 12 or so feet away

4) FZ20 or FZ1 in Micro mode [can't remember which camera I took this one with.

So I believe the FZ1 and FZ20 have great Micro ability. I took these pictures in the micro mode and I'm not good at it but they turned out well, I think!

My Sony was a great bargain. It's loaded with features, a Carl Zeiss Lens, it's under $500 and features a uniques infared Nightshot setting that can capture an image in pitch dark.

I also have the Fuji S7000 and have found it to be a good camera, although I like taking nature scenes and out side shots more. I have been able to take some pretty good portrait shots.

I guess the real measure for me is do I wish I had spent my $427 on some other camera? the only one that even tempts me (in that price range) would have been the Panasonic FZ20.

I'd say go with the Canon G6. It gets really good reviews. Here is a review on it:

Canon G6

You can get it at buydig for $497

The Canon G6 and Sony V3 are roughly comparable. Both are excellent.

Agreed. One neat feature that the Canon G6 has that the Sony V3 lacks is a tilt/swivel LCD screen which makes it easier to set up shots of you and all your friends. The G6 does not have the infrared capabilities of the V3, and I understand the shutter lag is a bit longer on the G6.

Here is a "short-list" of cameras to consider. Each has at least 4 megapixels and at least a 135mm-equivalent telephoto. All cameras on this list can be operated fully manually (focus, aperture, shutter speed and white-balance), take a hot-shoe flash, and are tripod mountable. None are over $550.

Panasonic's DMC-FZ15K ($419.88) boasts built-in image stabilization (IS) and an impressive optical 12x tele zoom. The main drawbacks on this camera are that a lot of users have complained about excessive noise at longer exposures/higer ISO.

The Minolta DiMAGE Z3 ($379.99) boasts an incredible 1cm minimum macro focusing range. Like the Panasonic, this camera also has a 12x tele zoom and IS. Also like the Panasonic, Minolta cameras tend to be subject to long exposure/high ISO noise, though the complaints seem less prevalent on the Minolta than on the Panasonic.

The Olympus C770 ($409.95) is easily my camera of choice for you. Though this camera lacks IS capability, I don't think that will be a a major issue for you, as you will most likely be shooting with flash or strobes, making handholding easy. Since you will be doing self-portraits I assume you have (or plan to purchase) a tripod, and IS should not be used on a tripod in any case. This camera also supports a remote control, a valuable feature for self-portraits (the Minolta and the Panasonic do not offer this).

I think you will be very happy with the Olympus, but whichever camera you choose, I look forward to your photos!

I would not do the G6 if you are in to general shooting and might want a real telephoto capability.

But for what you say, I agree totally about the G6 being the best choice for portraits. And here's why. Of the cameras listed, this one has the largest aperture (F2.0) and shoots RAW format, which gives much better and more professional results than shooting JPG or TIFF.

EXTRAS ALSO: wireless remote control included; hot shoe, and best of all, swivel LCD can be turned to face you for a self portrait.

I am very happy with the Panasonic FZ20, sells for $499 at B&H Photo. It is 5 megapixels, 12X Optical Zoom, ISO down to 80. The colors are basically perfect right out of the camera and the pictures very sharp. The Anti-Shake works very well. Also very fast recording to the chip compared to the earlier FZ10.

I wouldn't rush into any decisions right now.

With the 2005 Photo Marketing Association Show starting any day now, there are loads of new cameras being announced every day.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 is one of several that sounds really interesting. Also have a look at Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ4 / DMC-FZ5. I'm looking at buying a new camera myself one of these days and will be very interested to see the reviews of these two.

Almost forgot about the f717. Highly rated. Seems like half the people here had them before going to the next step and getting a dSLR.

I just sold my F717 on ebay for 495 to help finance my new Canon 20D...my F717 was 2 years old! It took many great photos, in my opinion...really clear and barely any noise at all. You can still find them at a good price, with EXTRAS!!!!
