I've long been interested in photography but I've never had the resources to really get into it, untill now that is. I bought a used 300D on eBay and it showed up last night.

The battery had just enough juice in it for me to shoot about 20 pictures and test out what the things I've been reading about really do. Out of these shots I got 1 that I liked enought to do some 'post processing' on (brightened it up a little and added a border that's about it).

So here it is. My first real attempt at photography, an abstract shot of my wife and son. Please let me know what you think :)

Congratulations on your foray into digital photography. The 300D is a great camera and you will not only learn a lot but also have fun! :-)

Now, for some constructive criticism. I like the idea of your picture, but I have a few suggestions. First, you said you had to brighten the photo up a little... well, it looks like it could use a LOT more light. Right now the colors are very muted and at first I wasn't even sure what I was looking at. Second, I would crop the photo more -- we don't really need to see the dark walls surrounding the main subjects... the picture would be more interesting with the subjects filling the frame. Third, I question your use of this particular bottle as the main in focus subject here. It'sfrankly not avery attractive bottle. ;-) Maybe focus on the mother/son and have the bottle be out of focus? Or try to do something interesting with light... it seems tha the bottle could really reflect and refract light in interesting ways... try shining a flashlight on it and see what happens. Finally, if you are going to use the bottle as your main subject, make sure nothing behind it will distract the viewer. Here, the out of focus lamp shade is ruining the effect.

There ya go. ;-) Keep playing with the camera -- you will get a lot out of it.

Hmm, yeah there is too much wall in there.

The shot was taken in my basement, the only lighting being a spot light reflecting off the wall behind me and the light from our 'TV' (a 90'' projection system). However, one of the things I like about the shot is the muted colors.

I have the shot with the people in focus and the bottle out but this looked better to me. Different taste I guess ;)

Thanks for the input, I'll have lots more to post as soon as the weather improves and I can get outside :D

I agree it should be cropped tighter and the wire and lampshade in the background need to be dealt with but, these can easily be taken care of in PS. I like the muted painterly effect you have brought about. Keep plugging away.

i wouldn't crop it down, but would take care of the lampshade, and cord.

it's got a feel almost opposite to the subject matter, which i find interesting.

I'll second what soup said. I really like the feel of the shot. It's not your everyday snapshot. Also, while this isn't quite a candid shot (you DID compose it), the quirkiness of the bottle adds to the image. I wouldn't change it.

Welcome to the neighborhood. Have fun shootin' the place up!

very nice for a 1st timer u don't usaly see the thought in a 1st time image that this has......

i would brighten it up alittle just a tad....(if u shot in raw it is easy to do upon opening the file)....if not mess with curves in PS.

nixt invest in a CPL as it will serve u the best of any filter u will ever by for a digital camera.......
(it would aslo clean up the reflections on the bottle)

the cord and lapshade have already been mentioned and i agree with the previous post....

most of all though it looks like it was well though through and u have captured a moment that no 1 else will ever be able to capture...........+ u have done it in an extreemly well composed picture and that is better that most.
