This was my original entry. I changed it at the last moment for a more friendly and less digital looking image. For some reason I felt uncomfortable with it. That is I knew it would invite the bell curve as some voters instintively vote down whatever looks digital. They have a strong antipathy. My submission, although lighter in feel, did not receive the special attention that this image did. Consider the following:

The moment the concept was born, I did a mock up with construction paper. Then I decided to perfect the cut out. At first I simply made a paper cut out of a dove. Well, went back and shaded the dove.

Then when happy, already 3 shoots, ( more time consuming because they double exposures and done alone) I decided to make the art work in Corel Draw. Then it stated all over again, doing a shoot and going back for another tweak. The first cut out had a sky from a magazine. I then wanted everything in the image to be as photographic as possible. The sky on the last version is my sky and the dove I shot back in October. Well, the only art work is the window. The shot was done as a double exposure employing tungsten for the green (controlled spot light to avoid spill) and strobe for the left. I also tried different variations.
Some projects tend to come to fruition quickly while others take their toll with valuable time. At the eve of the challenge I scrapped it.

However, I am happy when we have these challenges because they tend to tease the viewers. In fact, these challenges are good because they raise the average perception of the voters. I am still amazed at how many voters are not quite aware what can be done in basic editing. It just requires your tools and your imagination. Another reason i like these challenges is that they eventually reduce the dq request as we move on.

How it was done: The composite of window, clouds and dove was printed and cut to shape with the wing sticking out. You have lights set. Green is tungsten, left is strobe. Total darkness and camera set to 8 seconds. You set off timer and then time expose for tungsten. switch off the light and change face position and then fire manual strobe. Finish.

Great shot, as always. I hate when you put all the work into a shot, it comes out more or less as you imagine - but you realize its just not going to work.

On the one hand, given some of the response to your Broken entry, your probably right that there would have been a lot of presumption about digital manipulations - especially in a "basic rules" challenge. On the other, you would hope that people know your work by now, and that your capable of this kind of work without PS. Its always hard to read the minds of the public ahead of time...

I always enjoy reading your detailed descriptions on how you achieve these shots. Thanks for posting. Hope your entry is doing well.

graphicfunk, great image. But please forgive my ignorance here. I have to ask, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this (fingers crossed). I still don't understand how you did it. Are we looking at a picture of several printed images arranged on top of each other?

Love that image ... and yup, I would be one to admit that I am often amazed at what people can achieve in basic editing with a lot of imagination .... and this is a GREAT example of that.

I think it's a great picture, however I'm new to the site and have only entered one challenge and shamefully have never voted. tell me why when viewing the entries all of the photo's do not show.

I'm going to rephrase my last post. Tell me why when viewing the submissions all of the entries do not appear (for many of them, to me, do not appear to be photographs but works of elaborate pasting and clipping).

The eye can be fooled by double exposures, perspective trickery and clever use of backgrounds or mirrors. Basic Editing is not a limitation so much as another challenge. ;-)

hey funk...that photo is so unbelievable. It was done with basic editing? wow...I do underestimate basic. I could only imagine what you substituted this one with. It's gonna be a treat to see.

Amazing image, Daniel. I would have given it a 9, only because the green face is a little muddy. Other than that, this photo is an extraordinary accomplishment, and the dove-wing Dali mustache is a really nice touch. :-)
