With the new Canon XT 350D just released, I remembered a question I had in mind for some time. What is the 'rebel' that people keep referring to? Is there a difference between the normal 300 and 350 EOS cameras and the cameras with the 'rebel' tag?

I don't think they are any different functionally. I believe the models marked "350D" are intended for non-USA markets, while the "Rebel" moniker is for USA-models. |

Canon have called all their entry level SLRs 'rebel' in some markets, KISS in others and numbers in still other markets
Rebel Ti
Digital Rebel
etc |

I did buy mine in Canada so maybe it's just a country model thing.

The north american models has 'Digital Rebel' on the lower right (looking from the front), whereas European models say '300D'. In Japan (and other parts of Asia?) it's marketed as the 'KISS'. Whatever it says on it it's still the same 300D camera body.

Yep, quite right...all are identical cameras...Kiss, Rebel & 300D. It is a regional thing, the Japanese think countries identify with certain names and numbers. UK have always had numbered Canons, so the tradition has been continued. USA seem to sell things with names like Rebel, Wrangler & Mustang on them. Japan seem to use cutie names for home market. But all in all, they are all the same!
Mine doesn't look like the one in the picture either...it's Black.

So basically the 350 is slightly lighter, faster, and it's 8.0 megapixels vs. the 6.3 that the 300D/Rebel is.
It's somewhere in between the grade of a 10D and a 20D.

The 300D was a stripped down 10D.
The 350XT is not a stripped down 20D, it is a new camera with new sensor and different functions.

I didn't say it is a stripped down version. I just placed it's quality between that of the 10D and 20D based on the cost. If it were better then the 20D, it would cost more, wouldn't it?

I didn't suggest you stated it was stripped down, I merely pointed out to anyone interested that it has its own niche in the Canon range. It is aimed at a different market to the 20D.

I've been thinking of "giving in" and upgrading and going crazy with all the choices. I guess I'll jump on the DSLR bandwagon, so I'm both excited and scared (whether I'm smart enough to figure out everything!)I'm considering Canon - either the 300D or newer 350? Anyone else want to put in their two cents worth?
About me - I like doing portraits (people and pets) and tote around my Britek strobes to people's houses. I also do a lot of spontaneous shots of people (usually ones I know so I don't get beat up) and urbanscapes -Chicago, NYC, New Orleans, etc.
This past weekend I tried (not a DSLR) the Sony DSC-F828 and it is so heavy. I also couldn't find a place on the camera to connect the cord for the studio lights (but I could be dense). Anyway, I'm glad I tried it, because it helped me decide not to choose it.
Okay, now I'll shut up. I'll appreciate any advice anyone would like to offer! |
