Anyone know anything about firewalls - i brought Mcafee's latest suite, of which there is a firewall.
When watching the real time statistics - there are "Unsolicited attempts to connect" t a rate of about once every 30 seconds. All from different Ip addresses and traced to different parts of the world.
I presume this is normal as I have no viruses etc, what is this though?
I am not even browsing he web.

Basically, its people probably trying to do port scans to see what they can find out on the network. better than a software firewall is a harware one. like a netgear router/firewall... but that would imply that you were on broadband access connected directly to your computer which is just a bad choice alltogether. get a real firewall between you and the internet.

a few random hits a minute is nothing to be concerned about -- a few thousand a second on the other hand ...
As for understanding what firewalls are and what they can and can't do for you, there are a great many primers on the internet -- including this one, "Internet Firewall Essentials".
