I was a little disappointed in my score for this challenge but it will do nothing but make me strive to do better.

Thanks for the comments, those who left them. I chose this image in part *because* of the fact that the color of the light was pink, as it shone through the silks of the henna tent where the photo was taken. Apparently many others didn't like the effect. The pair were indeed sisters, and all I did was ask if I could photograph them and told them where I'd like them to stand. They did the posing and facial expressions themselves. It would appear the sensuality of the image was also a turn off for many voters.
Regardless of the votes I feel this is one of the best images I've ever taken.

However, I have gone into despair mode. The challenge asked us to make lighting a KEY element, which in most cases was ignored IMHO. I feel like I've joined the horticultural society. If there were a challenge that said shoot a picture on the moon...flowers would still be there and everyone would vote them into the top 20.

First, you will be pleased to know that I took over 700 flower images in the last week and did not submit a single one for a challenge. :)
However, I would respectfully disagree with your opinion regarding flower images in this challenge.
There were 5 flower pictures in the top 30, that hardly constitues a monopoly. The three in the top 10 all carefully used backlighting which is difficulty to do properly. Though lighting was not a super strong component it did play a pivotal role in each of their compositions.
I do agree that lighting was not as strong of a component in the compositions in this challenge as might be expected overall. It being a lighting challenge I would have expected a lot more B&W with black backgrounds and lighting from unique and obtuse angles. In those cases lighting is everything. But precious few DPCers have ever had any training in good lighting and we, as a group, simply don't know how to use it as a strong compositional element.

This shot was taken in the mid-morning with backlighting from the east.
Here is an example of much the same shot with different lighting.
The point here is, the backlighting was the key element in the dramatic presentation. The second shot is pretty, but lacks the hues and punch of the first. For me the backlighting was a very key element. |
