Man, I just bought a new camera this weekend (according to FedEx, it was delivered to my building this morning) yet I'm already eyeing the greener pastures in the horizon.
I went with a Nikon 8800, mostly because I got a fantastic price, but also because I just couldn't justify buying a dSLR for recreational use.
But I was at the USPRO bike race in Philly on Sunday tinkering with my friend's D100 and Nikkor 300mm tele set-up. Ugh. I got home, looked at my credit card bill and couldn't help but get this sinking feeling that I was wasting my money with the P&S gear ... |

Not necessarily envy, but it tickled me nonetheless...
I've been documenting my son's baseball team this season by taking photos at practically every game. Early in the season, the parents were all curious about the 10D and how "fancy" it was (we live in rural east Texas so you can see where I'm going). The kids were pretty excited to have their pic taken all the time as well. They're all used to me being there, pointing my lens in their faces. I'm making a season slideshow DVD for each kiddo to have as a keepsake.
One night at an away game, I was shooting from the dugout entrance of the opposing team, and had been for a few innings. Out of nowhere, an older, boot-and-duster wearing gentleman walks up to me and asks me (and I quote)"You got one a them thar fixed aperture lenses on that thang?" I was kind of taken aback, as my expression must have shown. He continued on and told me that he had just recently gotten himself one of "them thar" 10D's and was wanting a 70-200 f/2.8 L to go with it so he could get good night game pics of his son. When I told him I was just shooting with a 75-300 IS USM and had the ISO bumped to 800, he said, "Well, good luck, 'cuz your gonna have a purdy fair amounta noise in them thar pitchurs." I told him that I had a software program that helped with noise reduction, and he said "if it's that old Neat Image or whatever it's called, it makes people look all plasticky." I told him it worked well enough for me. He went on about his business, but I couldn't help but laugh a minute and think how neat photography is and how it brings like-minded people together where you least expect it.

On a trip to the zoo with my kids we stopped at the overpriced grease-pit for lunch. Someone with a gigantic lens was also having a bite. I held up my little Point & Shoot & said to her, "Now I have lens envy," in exactly those words!

Don't give up on that 8800 too quickly. It produces larger files than your friends D100 so you can print really big, and it can take fine images. It will serve you well while your learning your way up to a DSLR. No matter how big a camera you have you can always find someone with a bigger one.

Yeah, I know I can do some great work with the 8800, but I've worked a fair amount with DSLRs back in college and I know how powerful those machines are ... of course, a photograph is only as good as the eye behind the lens, right? I've taken some damn fine shots with my P8, I do have to say. |
